When you think of Frankincense, you probably think of one of the precious gifts given to Jesus by the three wise men. Frankincense was found in the Egyptian pyramids and tombs and was considered more valuable than gold! The essential oil derived from Frankincense has been lauded for its many medicinal properties, particularly for supporting the function of the brain or mind on all levels, the skin, and even eliminating cancer cells. I often think of frankincense as the master essential oil. Let’s look at the numerous beneficial properties of Frankincense essential oil in more detail.
Frankincense essential oil can give your immune and limbic system a boost. Frankincense can increase white blood cell activity in your body in order to help you fight off viruses, bacteria and other pathogens that can make you sick. In addition, it contains sesquiterpenes, which have been shown to help stimulate the hypothalamus so that your body is better able to produce and regulate the hormones it requires. This works well for those who may be suffering from a hormonal imbalance due to stress, lack of sleep, poor liver function or other ailments. This is a compelling testimonial:
“I was in the Army and was given a bad vaccine and was exposed to chemicals most likely exposed to dioxine better known as Agent Orange. It caused my immune system to fail and I ended up with a cancer like disease. Either Wegener’s or a lethal midline granuloma. Whatever it was ate my entire face. My eye sockets, gum and jaw bones, my nose and my palate.
A friend of mine sent me frankincense essential oil and told me to apply it to my facial area like goggles. I did. This cancer like disease stopped when it got to my brain stem…
I also used oil of oregano as well as the frankincense. My history is documented and my doctors at Stanford, UC Davis and UCSF and the V.A. hospitals in Palo Alto and San Francisco are amazed and know I use things other than conventional medicine. They may not always agree with my protocol but they have told me to continue doing whatever it is that I do. I am grateful to be alive!” – Sheila Schultz
Try adding Frankincense essential oil into your beauty regimen. A comprehensive review by the Dr. Harisingh Gour University in India has noted that applying Frankincense essential oil on the skin is one of the most effective ways to help eliminate the scar’s visibility and improve elasticity. If you have scarring from an accident or have undergone surgery, this may be of great interest to you. In addition, Frankincense can also be used to minimise acne scars in order to have clearer and fresher skin. This is one of the reasons Frankincense essential oil, alongside tea tree oil, is being used more and more in products such as moisturisers and anti-acne products.
“After reading some of the testimonials listed under skin conditions, I decided to try using frankincense oil on two red, peeling spots on my forehead. I have had them for about ten years and never diagnosed or treated but at the very least knew it was from sun damage and becoming concerned that they were precancerous. After using frankincense either once or twice a month both red spots are reduced in size and no longer peeling. I’ll continue to use frankincense to see if the spots disappear but they are well on their way to healing.”

You can focus on the positive side of life by inhaling a few drops of Frankincense essential oil on your hands, or by diffusing it into the air. A study in the journal of Psychopharmacology has shown that the compound incensole acetate in Frankincense can help reduce depressive-like behaviour, while also positively affecting the part of your brain that is needed to be able to learn and think. In addition, a study from the Medical Association of Thailand also reported that alongside lavender and rose essential oils, Frankincense essential oil also helped with relieving anxiety and fear. So the next time you need to take a breather and ease anxiety, make sure you have a bottle of Frankincense essential oil handy in your handbag or desk drawer.
“I began putting frankincense (just a couple drops diluted with olive oil) on my feet each night for general immune support. For as long as I can remember, I’ve dealt with varying degrees of anxiety. Most of the time it’s no big deal, but it’s always there somewhere in the back of my mind.
After a few weeks of nightly application of the frankincense, I realized the anxiety was gone. I felt very centered, grounded, and relaxed; even about things that normally would trigger a high level of stress for me.
Then I got lazy and stopped using the frankincense, and the anxiety came right back. I liked being free of that, so now I’m sticking to my nightly ritual and have added a drop of the Peace and Calming blend layered on top of the frankincense.” – Annette C.
Frankincense essential oil has cancer-fighting qualities. There are lots of different studies that suggest that Frankincense essential oil can play a huge part in repressing the development of many different types of cancer cells. A study by the BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine suggests that Frankincense essential oil may be used as a therapeutic agent for treating breast cancer. Another one of their studies also showed that Frankincense essential oil can also be used as a treatment for a particular type of aggressive pancreatic cancer. According to another study from the Leicester University, ovarian cancer cells that have been shown to be resistant to chemotherapy appear to be more sensitive to Frankincense essential oil.
“Frankincense has been used as a folk medicine for centuries due to its anti- inflammatory properties, making it a viable treatment for asthma, skin conditions and gastroenteritis among others. Previous studies have also successfully linked AKBA [(acetyl-11-keto-beta-boswellic acid) derived from the resin] as a potential treatment for many other cancers, including colon, breast and prostate cancer; however this is the first study to demonstrate its potential in combating ovarian cancer.”

Although more research must be conducted in order to find more conclusive results, these studies, along with numerous testimonials, can give us a hint of just how powerful frankincense can be in suppressing cancer!
“I was diagnosed with a grape-fruit size fibroid tumor along with soft tissue growths on one ovary and was scheduled for surgery. Mind you, this tumor was growing every day and I looked like I was slightly pregnant. The surgery was about 5 weeks away and I was feeling more and more discomfort so I started to use Frankincense because of the anti-tumoral properties. I made some capsules of 3-5 drops mixed with V-6 oil and took one twice a day.
After just two days of taking them, I began to sweat heavily even while just sitting at my desk at work. Along with that, my already heavy period was getting heavier. I also continued to feel slightly fatigued for a couple of days but continued to take the Frankincense.
By the third day I felt much better and I felt the swelling of my stomach had actually reduced. I took the capsules for five consecutive days. While using Frankincense, my body flushed a lot of the toxins that were built up in my uterus and I felt much better as a result.
Eventually, I also used Frankincense and Lavender on the area of my abdomen where my incision was to be to help to strengthen the tissue prior to surgery and reduce scarring. I’ve been pleased with the results and my Doctor has commented on how well and how quickly the incision has healed.”

If you’re interested in using frankincense essential oil, especially internally, make sure it is of therapeutic grade quality like Young Living. There may be times when you see that a bottle of essential oil claims to be 100% pure, but in many cases it’s not. Once you’ve found a reputable and trustworthy seller of therapeutic grade essential oils such as Young Living, you must always read the instructions before attempting to ingest, inhale or apply the oils.
Remember essential oils never cure anything; they support your system to self-regulate and restore its innate balance. Even if you know you have to have surgery or chemotherapy, frankincense may support your body in minimising the side effects and also improving recovery time. As I said, I believe Frankincense is a ‘master’ essential oil and it was considered more valuable than gold in ancient cultures in both the Middle East and East for very good reason. Let’s get healthy the natural way!
